India's Solar Power Surges to 26GW... Transmission Network Bottlenecks Determine Power Supply

India has solidified its position as a key player in the global solar market by installing 26 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity by mid-2026. Utility-scale solar projects and rooftop installations have both expanded significantly, with grid expansion and storage infrastructure now emerging as critical next steps. JMK Research reported that approximately 26 GW of solar and 2.9 GW of wind were added in the first half of 2024, representing a 43% year-over-year increase in solar installations. However, wind capacity saw a 16% decline compared to the same period last year. Utility-scale solar accounted for 19 GW, while rooftop solar grew 104% year-over-year to 6.4 GW. Regional leaders included Gujarat (7.6 GW), Rajasthan (6.6 GW), and Tamil Nadu (2.4 GW), collectively representing over 60% of the country's solar capacity additions. Analysts note that while the 47 GW annual target for solar and wind by 2026 appears achievable based on first-half trends, grid connectivity and transmission upgrades will be essential to convert new infrastructure into actual power supply.
