France Orders Blockade of Polymarket Access After Payment Blockade Failed
France has escalated its crackdown on Polymarket by ordering internet service providers to block access, following a previous payment blockade in November 2024. Despite initial restrictions, users could still access the site to check market prices and dividends, leading ANJ to classify such exposure as illegal advertising. Fines for unauthorized betting sites can reach up to 100,000 euros. Authorities argue that merely displaying real-time market prices constitutes an invitation to participate in illegal gambling. The block remains in place while Polymarket is deemed non-compliant with French regulations. Even after the payment block, Polymarket saw 578,751 visits and 205,057 unique visitors in France in June. Despite shrinking regulated markets, Polymarket reported over $1 billion in revenue last month, with most profits coming from operations outside restricted regions.
