KIST Europe Research Institute Transforms into a Korean-EU Science and Technology Hub

The Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) Europe Research Institute, established in 1996 in Zwickau, Germany, has evolved from a small rented office space with three employees into a major hub for Korean-EU science and technology collaboration. Initially launched to support environmental engineering research and technology exchanges, the institute grew by expanding its local research infrastructure and collaboration networks, becoming a critical entry point for Korean researchers and companies seeking to establish R&D operations in Europe. Despite early challenges including limited recognition as both a Korean and European research institution, the institute gradually improved its facilities, adding research buildings, a collaboration center, and a guesthouse for visiting researchers. Today, it operates a 9,144㎡ complex including research and collaboration facilities, situated within a cluster of major European research institutions at the Zwickau campus of the University of Applied Sciences Zwickau.
