A fire at Yongpoong Sokpo Refinery's sulfuric acid production facility has raised concerns about its impact on production and operations. The company was recently fined 204 billion won for accounting standards violations, adding to management burdens. On April 23, authorities reported the fire broke out at the facility in Boseong, Gyeongju, lasting approximately six hours before being extinguished. No injuries or chemical leaks were reported, and authorities are investigating the cause. While the fire affected sulfuric acid production linked to zinc smelting processes, the extent of damage and recovery timeline remain unclear. The refinery's first-quarter 2025 operational rate was 57.23%, up from 45.95% in 2024, but fire recovery and process integration could affect production normalization. Yongpoong has not issued separate production suspension announcements, though regulations require disclosure if operations impact exceed 2.5% of annual revenue. With 2025 estimated revenue at 29,090 billion won, a 727 billion won threshold could trigger disclosure if production disruptions spread to zinc smelting.
