OpenAI Expands 'ChatGPT Health' to All U.S. Adults, Integrates with Apple Health and Medical Records

OpenAI is expanding its health-focused 'ChatGPT Health' service to all U.S. users aged 18 and older, making it available via web and iOS for all subscription tiers. The company announced it will sequentially roll out the service to logged-in users across free, Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans. Initially piloted through a separate health hub in January, the service now connects with Apple Health, U.S. hospital systems' electronic medical records, OnMedial, and Function Health. OpenAI reported weekly health-related queries increased from 230 million to 3 billion during the pilot, with 70% of interactions occurring outside the dedicated hub. The company enhanced health query capabilities to provide answers without requiring users to go through the specialized hub. Model performance for health inquiries has also improved, with GPT-5.5 Instant offering better emergency detection for free users and GPT-5.6 Sol providing more accurate responses for paid users. All connected medical records and Apple Health data are not used for model training or advertising, with user consent required for data access and 30-day deletion upon disconnection. The expansion came a day after a Florida user sued OpenAI over potentially dangerous medical advice from ChatGPT, though no direct link between the lawsuit and service expansion was found. OpenAI reiterated in its terms of service that ChatGPT is not intended for disease diagnosis or treatment, urging users to consult medical professionals for critical health decisions. As competitors like Anthropic and Google expand AI healthcare services, questions remain about balancing medical convenience with safety.
