LG Energy Solution Breaks 100,000 Patent Filings as First Global Battery Company

LG Energy Solution has surpassed 100,000 global patent filings, becoming the first battery company to achieve this milestone. As of last month, the company reported approximately 59,000 registered global patents and 100,000 filed patents, according to a statement released on February 21. Following its 2023 breakthrough in exceeding KRW 1 trillion in annual R&D investment, the company invested KRW 1.3277 trillion in R&D in 2023. The company emphasized that this success stems from over 30 years of technological accumulation across battery materials, electrode design, cells, packs, battery management systems (BMS), and manufacturing processes. It also highlighted its differentiated patent portfolio in commercialized technologies, including the Safety Reinforced Separator (SRS), Double Layer Slot Die Coating (DLD), and carbon nanotube (CNT) dispersion technology. These innovations have enabled consecutive patent dispute victories abroad. In next-generation technologies, the company has established a strong patent foundation, including LMR (lithium manganese-rich) cathode and silicon anode combinations, as well as approximately 450 patents for dry electrode processes that eliminate organic solvents.
