AWS to Advance Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computer Cloud Services with QuEra Computing
Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced plans to offer its fault-tolerant quantum computer 'Libra' via Amazon Braket by 2028 through expanded collaboration with quantum computing company QuEra Computing. AWS launched Amazon Braket in 2020 as a cloud service providing access to various quantum computing hardware. Fault-tolerant quantum computing overcomes the fundamental limitation of qubits being prone to errors from environmental changes, enabling quantum computers to tackle problems beyond classical computers' capabilities. The expanded partnership centers on the Megaquop-scale quantum device Libra, which can perform over 1 million quantum operations using hundreds of logical qubits, reaching the critical threshold for practical applications. AWS emphasized that Libra's cloud availability will allow global researchers and enterprises to access fault-tolerant quantum computing without specialized hardware. AWS also develops its own superconducting cat qubit-based chip Ocelot at its quantum computing center. Mikhail Lukin, QuEra's Chief Science Officer, called the collaboration a pivotal moment in achieving practical fault-tolerant quantum computing, enabling transformative applications and expanding access to a broader scientific community.
