Rocket Lab Acquires Satellite Communication Firm Iridium for $8 Billion... Challenger to SpaceX

Rocket Lab has agreed to acquire satellite communications company Iridium Communications for $8 billion, aiming to compete with SpaceX. With SpaceX's satellite services expanding among consumer and government customers, industry consolidation is intensifying. Globalstar inked a deal to be acquired by Amazon in April, and SES completed its acquisition of Intelsat last year. SpaceX also purchased EchoStar frequencies. Rocket Lab plans to combine its launch and satellite manufacturing capabilities with Iridium's global service footprint and frequency assets to develop next-generation satellites. Iridium currently operates 66 low-earth orbit satellites providing communication services to ships, mines, and U.S. government agencies. The company holds global frequency rights and has at least 10 years of satellite lifespan remaining, according to WSJ. Peter Beck, Rocket Lab CEO, stated, 'We've secured exceptional frequencies and acquired a cash-generating business.' Iridium reported revenue of $872 million and net income of $114 million last year.
