Broadcasting Media Communications Council to Comprehensive Response to Online Discrimination and Hate Speech... Strengthening Monitoring

The Broadcasting Media Communications Council announced plans to enhance monitoring and review of discrimination and hate speech online, while encouraging self-regulation by internet platforms and expanding media ethics education for youth. The revised Information and Communications Network Act, effective July 7, classifies content promoting violence or discrimination based on race, nationality, region, gender, disability, age, social status, income, or assets as illegal. The council has previously issued correction demands for over 3,000 instances of discriminatory content and took action against social media accounts spreading hate toward Japanese comfort women victims. It will also seek industry cooperation for self-regulation, engage with civil society for victim redress, and conduct youth media ethics education through 11 education offices.
