Xiaomi Reenters the Battle Against Tesla Model Y with YU7 Standard and GT Models

Xiaomi has launched the SUV 'YU7' to challenge Tesla's Model Y once again, reviving the standard model and introducing the high-performance 'YU7 GT' to restructure its product lineup and expand its market presence. According to a report by the Chinese automotive media Gasgoo, Xiaomi's founder and CEO Lei Jun stated that Xiaomi had achieved two wins and eight losses in its 10-month competition against the Model Y, but vowed not to give up on its bid for the global best-selling model. The YU7 initially garnered significant attention after securing 240,000 pre-orders within 18 hours of its launch in June 2023, and it briefly topped China's SUV sales in January 2024 before being overtaken by the Model Y. As of now, YU7's cumulative deliveries have reached around 230,000 units. Xiaomi announced a revised product strategy at its recent event, reintroducing the standard model that had previously been excluded. The company had previously focused on competing with the Model Y through its high-performance long-range variant, but consumer preferences showed a stronger demand for the more affordable standard model. Lei Jun acknowledged that removing the standard model was a mistake. The new YU7 standard model starts at 233,500 yuan (5.217 million won), equipped with a 73kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery and a 752V silicon carbide platform, offering a maximum range of 643 km (CLTC) per charge and up to 405 km with a 15-minute charge. Xiaomi also enhanced its price competitiveness by including features like Nappa leather seats, power tailgate, HEPA filter, and rear control display as standard. The high-performance YU7 GT was also unveiled, featuring a self-developed V8s EVO motor and dual-motor system for a peak power output of 1,003 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.92 seconds and reach a top speed of 300 km/h. The GT is equipped with a 101.7kWh ternary lithium battery, offering a maximum range of 705 km (CLTC) per charge. It also includes advanced performance features such as dual-valve CDC suspension, electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD), and carbon-ceramic brakes, starting at 389,900 yuan (8.712 million won). Xiaomi aims to enter the high-performance luxury SUV market, traditionally dominated by European brands, with the YU7 GT. The development process involved experts from BMW's M division.

💡 AI analysis: Xiaomi's continued competitive strategy against Tesla Model Y signals a heightened rivalry in the EV market, potentially expanding Chinese firms' influence in global EV competition.
