Microsoft to Complete Core Service Quantum-Resistant Cryptography Transition by 2029
Microsoft has accelerated its 'Quantum Safe Program' and plans to integrate quantum readiness indicators into its security initiative 'Secure Future Initiative.' The company emphasized that organizations must begin preparations immediately, as transitioning large-scale infrastructure could take years. Enhancing system flexibility and modernizing infrastructure are key to reducing future complexity in cryptographic transitions. Immediate priorities include upgrading network cryptography through TLS 1.3 and hybrid key exchange technology. Microsoft also aims to secure 'cryptographic agility' to enable seamless algorithm shifts without major application redesigns, while modernizing trust frameworks for certificate issuance, software updates, code signing, and hardware-based protection. Mark Lucich, Microsoft Azure's Chief Technology Officer, described the transition as a risk-based decision to preemptively address potential future threats.
