Apple Commences DRAM Testing with Chinese Blacklisted CXMT

Apple is reportedly testing the use of DRAM chips from Changxin Memory Technologies (CXMT) in products sold in China, marking a potential shift in its supply chain strategy. CXMT, a state-backed Chinese memory manufacturer on the U.S. blacklist known as '1260H,' is emerging as a key player in the global semiconductor market. The Financial Times cited multiple sources stating Apple is piloting CXMT's DRAM in China-specific devices, though the company has not publicly commented. CXMT, which has received substantial government support and now ranks as the fourth-largest DRAM manufacturer globally, faces scrutiny due to its military ties. Apple's decision follows past political tensions, including criticism from U.S. legislators over its use of Chinese-made memory components. Despite CXMT's recent financial rebound and strategic importance to China's semiconductor self-reliance goals, industry analysts note its production expansion may not immediately lower global DRAM prices.
