Ethereum Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions by Over 99%
Ethereum's transition to proof-of-stake reduced its power consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by over 99%, according to a Cambridge University study. Post-Merge power demand dropped from 2.4 gigawatts to 0.9 megawatts, with annual energy use equivalent to 7.87 gigawatt-hours. Emissions fell to 2.37 kilotonnes of CO2-equivalent, equivalent to 3.5 round-trip flights of a Boeing 747 or annual energy use of 900 UK households. Approximately 56.4% of Ethereum's power usage comes from sustainable energy sources.
