Even Healthy Individuals at Risk of Severe Heat-Related Illnesses... First 'Heatwave Emergency Warning' Issued in Parts of Gyeongnam
The first 'Heatwave Emergency Warning' has been issued in parts of Gyeongnam due to extreme heat conditions. This warning is activated when peak perceived temperatures reach 35°C for two consecutive days or 38°C with a forecasted peak of 39°C. Heatwaves can directly cause heat-related illnesses such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion, while also exacerbating existing conditions like cardiovascular, respiratory, and kidney diseases, increasing hospitalization and mortality risks. During the warning period, even healthy individuals may develop severe heat-related illnesses, necessitating heightened precautions. Affected areas should immediately halt outdoor activities like farming, construction, sports, and outdoor events, relocate to cool and shaded areas, and check on family and neighbors. The Ministry of Health emphasized adherence to the 'Three-Step Survival Guidelines' (Stop, Move, Check) when the warning is issued. According to the 2026 'Heat-Related Illness Emergency Room Monitoring System,' heat-related cases have been steadily rising, with 535 reported cases and two estimated fatalities as of July 10, 2024. Last year's prolonged heatwave alerts also led to a significant increase in heat-related illnesses, with 4,460 cases and 29 estimated deaths under the 2025 monitoring system.
