64% Drop in Traffic for Illegal Webtoon Sites... Two-Month Results of Emergency Blocking Measures Show Progress
The revised Copyright Act's emergency blocking and access blocking measures have shown visible results after two months of implementation. The largest illegal webtoon site has closed, and users are shifting to legal platforms. As of June 30, 585 emergency blocks and 172 access blocks were executed since the policy began on May 11. Emergency blocking allows rapid blocking of overseas illegal sites without prior review, significantly reducing the previous multi-month process. Traffic from the top three illegal sites dropped 64% daily, with Manatoki and Northoki seeing 96% and 95% declines, respectively. Legal app installations rose 77%, and writer revenue from paid views tripled. Industry surveys indicate 62% of companies feel the policy's impact, though some cite bypass methods like CDN and HTTPS encryption as challenges. Authorities are collaborating with tech firms to enhance blocking measures.
