Daejeon Tram and Subway Delays Raise Concerns Over Future Mobility Blueprint

Daejeon City's ambitious projects for hydrogen-powered trams and 3-section subway buses are facing repeated delays, casting doubt on its vision for a new transportation system. These delays stem from inadequate verification of institutional and technological limitations when introducing novel transit technologies. The hydrogen tram, a first in South Korea, operates without overhead lines using hydrogen fuel cells and batteries, offering benefits like reduced urban disruption and lower maintenance costs. However, it requires rigorous testing of multiple systems including fuel cell stability, energy management, wireless charging, and signaling integration. Compounding these challenges are land acquisition issues and schedule changes, pushing the original 2028 opening date to 2030. The 3-section subway bus, evaluated as a next-generation BRT vehicle, also faces regulatory hurdles due to its unprecedented 30-meter length, necessitating legal reforms. Contract issues now threaten the project, with only one of three contracted vehicles delivered and risks of contract termination and advance payments looming.
