Samsung SDI Proves World's First Fire Safety for UPS Batteries

Samsung SDI's UPS (uninterruptible power supply) batteries have passed global fire safety certifications, marking recognition of their technological capabilities. The company confirmed on April 14 that its batteries met all evaluation criteria in an Indoor LSFT (Large Scale Fire Test) conducted by UL Solutions, a certification body. UPS systems ensure continuous power supply during outages or voltage instability, critical for AI data centers. The test involved intentionally igniting batteries in a rack and verifying fire spread to adjacent racks or systems. UL Solutions introduced the test in early 2024 to assess fire risks during actual incidents. Samsung SDI became the first company to meet these standards. The ignited battery modules fully burned out without causing fire spread, gas emission, explosion, or rupture, demonstrating compliance with all safety standards. Its self-extinguishing capability without sprinklers, achieved through proprietary thermal management design, was highlighted. The company used high-output LMO (lithium manganese oxide) batteries with durable aluminum casings and vent systems. Global tech firms and data center operators now prioritize fire safety certifications when selecting battery suppliers. Samsung SDI emphasizes this achievement strengthens its safety competitiveness. The company plans to accelerate market expansion in AI data centers and power ESS (energy storage systems) using its safety technologies. A spokesperson noted the test validation of differentiated safety technology, positioning it to deliver trusted solutions across diverse markets.
