Bolivia Considers Integrating USDT into Official Payment Network... Peso and Dollar Coexistence Possible

The Bolivian government is reviewing options to include Tether's stablecoin USDT in its official payment system, potentially alongside the Bolivian peso and U.S. dollars. Economy Minister Jose Gabriel Espinoza stated the ministry is evaluating a framework that would incorporate banks, digital wallets, and payment service providers. While USDT lacks official regulatory status or legal tender designation, officials aim to integrate it into the payment system as a single currency alongside the peso and dollar. This move reflects efforts to bring existing USDT usage into the formal financial system, as the cryptocurrency has become popular for preserving savings, settling imports, and remittances due to cash shortages and the absence of traditional banking infrastructure. If adopted, such transactions would fall under regulated financial systems, following Bolivia's 2024 easing of crypto transaction restrictions and the country's rapid growth in crypto trading volumes.
