PEARL ABIS Reveals 16-Year Development Journey... Sheds Light on Self-Developed Engine and 'Red Desert' Ambitions
PEARL ABIS unveiled a documentary titled 'The Choices That Made PEARL ABIS: Following the Beginning' on its official YouTube channel 'PEARL CRUTCH.' The 14-minute video highlighted the company's founding background, tracing its origins to 2010 when seven developers gathered to create an environment solely focused on game development. Chairman Kim Daeyoul, who previously led successful online game projects like 'Rival Online,' 'R2,' and 'C9' and won the Best Developer Award at the 2009 Korean Game Awards, established PEARL ABIS with the belief that developers must directly decide technical and directional aspects to achieve high-quality games. From the outset, PEARL ABIS developed its MMORPG 'Black Desert' alongside its proprietary engine, recognizing the need to build custom development tools. The process included innovations like animators performing motion capture and planners verifying scenes in real-time, fostering a cross-disciplinary collaboration culture prioritizing completion quality. Building on its MMORPG expertise, PEARL ABIS ventured into the new genre of open-world action adventure with 'Red Desert,' its first triple-A single-player package game and new IP. The project leveraged accumulated technology from 'Black Desert' while developing a next-gen engine, 'Black Space,' to support larger open worlds, multi-platform compatibility, and future projects. 'Red Desert' focuses on immersing players in a realistic world through detailed environmental design, spatial atmosphere, and audio. PEARL ABIS emphasized that its journey from self-engine development to 'Black Desert' and 'Red Desert' represents a continuous pursuit of excellence in gaming, with plans to maintain this philosophy for future player experiences.
