Middle-Aged to Elderly Engaging in Movies and Museums Show Lower Biological Age

A study analyzing 1,900 UK adults over 50 found that those with higher cultural activity participation displayed lower biological age. Participants were surveyed on movie theater, museum, theater, concert, and opera attendance, while researchers measured 10 physiological indicators including blood pressure, cholesterol, BMI, and walking speed. Results showed individuals engaging in cultural activities monthly had a biological age of 66.9, lower than less active groups. Even after adjusting for income and chronic diseases, higher cultural activity scores correlated with a 0.085-year (31-day) lower biological age. Researchers noted cultural engagement relates to wellness and modifiable health factors, potentially reducing biological aging. However, the observational study cannot prove causation. Experts emphasized the need for intervention research to confirm the causal link between cultural activities and biological aging, suggesting further analysis of specific health indicators tied to activity types and frequency.
