Global: China Regulates AI Companion Overuse... Users Shocks as They Part Ways with AI
The Chinese government has implemented regulations to curb excessive emotional dependency on AI chatbots by limiting usage time and content. Users who had long-term relationships with AI are now reporting feelings of loss akin to a real breakup. According to state media, five agencies including the National Internet Information Administration (CAC) introduced rules to restrict excessive AI interaction, requiring platforms to intervene when users face crises. New regulations mandate that platforms notify users to pause AI use after two hours of continuous use, display alerts about AI's non-human nature when emotional dependency indicators are detected, and block content that could overstimulate minors or harm real-world relationships. Platforms like ByteDance's Toutiao, Alibaba's Qwen, and Tencent's WeChat have suspended AI companion features ahead of the regulations. Some analysts suggest the policy also addresses China's population decline concerns, as overreliance on AI companions may reduce social interaction and marriage interest. However, the government has not directly linked the regulation to birth rate issues.
