Interview: Eum Min-yeong, Head of Korea Food Research Institute's Functional Platform Research Division, on Discovering Functional Properties in Kelp Extract and the Hope for Public Access

Functional material research gains significance when its outcomes transition into tangible products for the public. Eum Min-yeong, head of the Korea Food Research Institute's Functional Platform Research Division, highlighted that the recent recognition of kelp extract's stress-relief functionality marks a pivotal step toward industrialization. This achievement builds on prior recognition in 2015 for improving sleep quality, now expanding to stress reduction and anxiety mitigation. Eum noted that legal reforms now allow the institute to lead individual functionality applications, making this the first such case. Future plans include advancing to high-level functional material status to enable broader industry use, fostering innovation in the domestic food sector and benefiting coastal communities reliant on kelp cultivation.
