As U.S. semiconductor export restrictions intensify, Chinese tech giant Alibaba is leveraging open-source initiatives to secure AI software ecosystem sovereignty beyond hardware challenges. Its chip-design subsidiary T-Head announced at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai that it will fully open-source its AI chip architecture 'SAIL' for the Zhenwu series, enabling global developers to freely access the full software stack. SAIL converts AI model instructions into executable commands for Zhenwu chips, with T-Head's executive emphasizing that existing AI frameworks can be migrated within a week, supporting over 260 learning and inference tools. However, experts remain skeptical, noting that the claimed one-week migration timeline likely represents minimal code conversion, while real-world applications like distributed model training require months of advanced engineering for performance optimization, memory management, and runtime debugging. The absence of benchmark data comparing SAIL's computational efficiency to CUDA further raises questions about its practical viability.
