Companies and governments are intensifying efforts to secure ruthium supplies, particularly as neutral-atom quantum computing approaches commercialization. Production is limited since ruthium is primarily a byproduct of other mineral processing, leading to market forecasts predicting global demand to rise from 7.44 tons in 2025 to 11.96 tons by 2035. Innovations by firms like QuEra Computing, Pasqal, and Atom Computing using laser-trapped rubidium-87 atoms as qubits have pushed quantum systems beyond 1,000 qubits, with ambitions to reach 10,000 qubits by 2032.
