The Rhode Island Supreme Court ruled that Daniel Monteiro had no legal claim to the 5.8 million dollar (approximately 85 billion won) lottery prize. The couple had divorced in 2020 after living separately for over three years, with the divorce finalized on October 8, 2020. Monteiro contested the divorce's validity after his ex-wife, Anna Barrella, won the instant lottery ticket on November 4, 2020, arguing the marriage was still legally binding at the time of the purchase. However, the court determined the divorce was finalized 20 days prior, and administrative errors could not retroactively invalidate the legal status of the marriage dissolution.
