An unusual heatwave that struck Central and Balkan Europe is gradually subsiding, with some areas expecting temperatures up to 10-12°C lower than usual. According to Severe Weather Europe, the intense heat is shifting northward due to changes in atmospheric circulation, allowing cold air from the north to move into Central and Eastern Europe. The temperature drop is attributed to Arctic air spreading southward, leading to 4-8°C lower temperatures in most Central and Eastern European regions. Hungary, Poland, and Romania are expected to exit the prolonged heatwave, with daytime highs dropping below 30°C, returning to seasonal averages. The most significant temperature changes are forecast for Thursday, with major drops in Italy's north, Slovenia, Croatia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Poland. Unusually cool conditions, up to 10-12°C below average, are expected in southern Italy, southern Balkans, and parts of Greece by Friday and Saturday. Overnight temperatures will also drop, with many areas seeing morning lows in the mid- to low-10s, potentially reaching 10°C in clear, calm regions. This cooling is anticipated to help alleviate the heat trapped in urban and building areas during the heatwave. However, weather risks may persist as warm, moist air from the Mediterranean collides with incoming cold air, potentially causing heavy rain and flooding in Italy, Greece, Romania, and the Black Sea region. Additionally, prolonged drought conditions may limit the effectiveness of any rainfall in reducing heightened wildfire risks.
