Personal Information Protection Committee Imposes Fines on TikTok and Apple... Collection and Use of Personal Information Without Legal Basis

The Personal Information Protection Committee has imposed a total fine of 105.58 billion won on TikTok and Apple for illegally collecting and utilizing personal data without legal grounds. Both companies transmitted user data overseas without proper justification. TikTok's behavior-tracking tools, used by over 71,000 domestic businesses, collected data from 9.45 million users in December 2023, linking device identifiers to user accounts for targeted advertising without explicit consent. Apple was also fined for collecting voice recordings and transcriptions from Siri users without prior authorization between August 2019 and October 2019.
