EU Maintains GDPR Adequacy Decision for Korea

The Personal Information Protection Commission announced that the European Commission has decided to continue maintaining its GDPR adequacy decision for South Korea. This follows the first review since the 2021 adequacy decision. The EU adequacy decision allows data transfers between EU citizens and the designated country under GDPR standards. The EU Commission regularly reviews adequacy decisions to ensure continued compliance with data protection levels. The PIPC stated that the EU Commission concluded South Korea's data protection framework maintains high standards since the adequacy decision. Song Kyung-hee, head of the PIPC, emphasized that the review reaffirms South Korea's international data protection standards and pledged ongoing cooperation with key nations to protect citizen data while supporting global data utilization by businesses.
