SoftBank Considers Acquiring Swiss Robotics Startup Gravis... Accelerating Physical AI Expansion
SoftBank is reportedly considering acquiring Swiss robotics startup Gravis Robotics, as part of a strategic move to secure leadership in the physical AI sector through the integration of AI and robotics technologies. Bloomberg reported on April 24 that SoftBank is exploring a significant stake acquisition in Gravis Robotics, based in Zurich, through its newly established AI and robotics-focused subsidiary Roze. The transaction could involve purchasing existing shares and gradually adding new capital, potentially valuing Gravis at over $500 million. However, the exact terms and structure remain undetermined, with both companies declining comment. Gravis, founded in 2022 from ETH Zurich, specializes in hardware and software for autonomous heavy machinery and raised $23 million in venture funding in November 2023. This acquisition aligns with Chairman Son Jung-wook's strategy to aggressively expand in robotics as a key AI industry. SoftBank has established Roze and plans to pursue a U.S. stock market listing. The company also formed Robo HD, a holding company to consolidate robotics assets, including investments in Berkshire Grey, Agility Robotics, and Skilled AI. Recent expansions include acquiring ABB's industrial robotics division for $5.4 billion and participating in new funding rounds for Agility Robotics. Son has long emphasized the growth potential of the robotics industry, though SoftBank discontinued its humanoid robot Pepper in 2020 and sold Boston Dynamics to Hyundai Motor Group in 2023.
