Midjourney Acquires Horoscope App, Expanding Business... Plans First Mobile App Launch

Midjourney, renowned for its image generation AI, has acquired the popular horoscope app Co-Star, marking its first independent image generation app development. This strategic move signals an expansion into mobile consumer services and AI-driven content creation platforms beyond its current image/video generation services. Bloomberg reported the acquisition completed this spring, though the deal amount remained undisclosed. Co-Star offers AI-generated and human-written horoscopes, personality analyses, friendship compatibility, and personalized advice based on birth charts, with 4.3 million monthly active users. The acquisition brought 24 Co-Star employees to Midjourney, including founder and CEO Bavu Guller, who will lead design strategy while retaining oversight of Co-Star operations. Midjourney also plans to establish a new organization integrating design, product planning, and frontend engineering for all projects over the next 6-12 months. While known for AI-based image/video tools, Midjourney has rapidly expanded into hardware and software projects, including a full-body ultrasound machine for spas. The company now manages eight simultaneous projects, with Co-Star acquisition aligning with its diversification strategy. CEO David Holts emphasized a "humanistic" philosophy focusing on enhancing human creativity and communication rather than AI technology itself. Midjourney currently provides image generation via website and Discord servers but plans to launch its first standalone app leveraging Co-Star's mobile experience. Holts outlined plans to expand into storytelling and virtual world creation using AI-generated media while developing new video generation models.
