This summer's extreme heat in Europe led to over 10,000 additional deaths compared to average summer levels last month, with most victims over 65. The EU, which has led in climate change mitigation, is now confronting the reality of its inadequate preparedness for climate impacts. While Europe's residential air conditioner adoption rate is around 20%—far lower than in South Korea—political debates have erupted over expanding cooling in schools, hospitals, and elderly care facilities. Critics argue air conditioners exacerbate power grid strain, urban heat islands, and greenhouse gas emissions from refrigerants. Yet China has swiftly capitalized on this gap, with EU air conditioner exports to China rising 43.2% year-over-year. Chinese manufacturers have reframed Europe's aging infrastructure and strict regulations as market opportunities, positioning their products as solutions to the continent's climate crisis.
