LG Energy Solution Innovates Battery Development with AI Agents and Experimental Automation

LG Energy Solution is accelerating its transition to an AI-integrated R&D framework by combining artificial intelligence (AI) agents with experimental automation. The company is utilizing AI agents to explore new material candidates, optimize performance, and apply AI to customer requirement analysis, cell design, test result interpretation, and prototype development scheduling. Repetitive data analysis and documentation tasks are now handled by AI, allowing researchers to focus on technical validation and core decision-making. This expansion broadens AI's role from support tasks like price forecasting and safety diagnostics to comprehensive R&D operations. With a growing portfolio spanning solid-state batteries, lithium-manganese-rich (LMR) cathode materials, dry electrodes, and sodium-ion batteries, as well as AI data centers and energy storage systems, the importance of systematic patent management and AI-driven R&D has increased. Specialized AI models are now developed to analyze battery characteristics difficult for general AI models to predict, such as gas generation and ion conductivity, while automated systems refine AI training data through material composition manufacturing and property testing. The company aims to halve development timelines or achieve equivalent R&D outputs with half the resources through these innovations.
