Aztec Launches v5 Alpha: Fully Private Transaction Proofs Possible on Mobile Devices
Aztec, a cryptocurrency privacy project, has released its v5 upgrade in alpha form. Co-founder Williamson explained the update aims to establish fully private transactions as the 'default' for the Ethereum ecosystem. The upgrade enables users to create end-to-end private transactions directly on mobile devices or laptops while maintaining censorship resistance and decentralization. Williamson emphasized that the 'client-side proof' approach differs from centralized data center proofs used by other ZK projects, stressing the need for proof capability on devices ranging from smartphones to $500 Lenovo laptops. The update reduces proof time by over 2x, cuts average private transaction costs by 50%, shortens average block generation time to 6 seconds from 14 seconds, and lowers rollup proof verification costs by 40%, reducing fully private token transfer fees below $0.05. This follows a warning to avoid the previously compromised v4 version after a March vulnerability incident. Aztec secured a $100 million Series B round in December 2022 with support from Paradigm and a16z.
