U.S. Air Force Reviews Space-Based Solar Power for Remote Military Operations... Also Advancing Germanium Securitization

The U.S. Air Force is exploring space-based solar power as a new energy source for remote military operations, aiming to reduce fuel supply burdens and enhance operational efficiency through wireless power transmission from satellites. The Department of Defense is concurrently advancing efforts to secure germanium, a critical material for satellite solar panels and various military equipment, while supporting private sector contracts and technology validation. Germanium's strategic importance spans high-efficiency solar cells, infrared optics, night vision devices, and weapon guidance systems. The Air Force views space-based solar power as a potential solution to structural challenges in military logistics, which currently rely heavily on diesel generators, fuel transport vehicles, and aerial resupply networks. The proposed system would collect solar energy in Earth's orbit and transmit it wirelessly to ground receivers, offering reliable power to remote areas unaffected by weather. In May, the Air Force signed a deal with Overture Energy to test large-scale military operations using space solar systems, with plans to deliver megawatts of power by 2030 and gigawatts globally by the early 2030s.
